Dog arthritis (osteoarthritis) is a degenerative joint disease that affects one out of five adult dogs in the USA. 

Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage covering the end of the joint bones is damaged or destroyed. The joint also loses its cushioning and shock absorbing lubricant, causing friction between bones, leading to severe pain and decreased mobility in affected joints. Because cartilage does not have a good nerve supply, arthritis damage can progress with no clear symptoms showing until the joint is severely damaged and the lubricating fluid has lost its ability to protect the bone cartilage surfaces. 

NOTE: For dogs with severe advanced arthritis, veterinarians often prescribe pain-relieving NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). USE THESE WITH CAUTION, as they may provide improved quality of life; however, they can cause serious side effects. As a group, NSAIDs may affect the kidneys, liver, stomach, and intestines.  A pain relief only strategy is not ideal as the arthritic dog will be more physically active and then further damage the arthritic joint and thus require a higher dosage of NSAIDs.
